This Old Ohio City House : Odell Construction Edition

This Old Ohio City House

This is the story of a couple who found their paradise right in their own backyard, within a 120-year-old apartment complex well overdue for a modern face-lift.

This 6-bedroom 4-bathroom multiple occupancy home was built in 1900 and purchased by the owners (let’s call them Tom and Susan) in 1997. The family utilized the first-floor space as their permanent home and rented out the top units until their children grew older and settled into adult life.

Now, as empty nesters, it was time for a change. Located near Lake Erie and many other amenities, the blossoming neighborhood was a perfect place to reside in Cleveland, so the couple decided to make this their forever home. Tom and Susan came to Odell Construction in January of 2019, seeking guidance on creating harmony within their dwelling as well as incorporating aging in place commodities to comfortably enjoy the space for years to come. Our design team quickly came to the rescue and started a whole home project that was an entire year in the making.

A Little History of Ohio City

First, a little history on why Ohio City has become one of Cleveland’s most sought-after destinations over the years. Founded in 1818, Ohio City was a melting pot of immigrants from England, Germany, Hungary, and Ireland. Sometimes referred to as the “Near West Side” of Cleveland, it sits on the western side of what is now downtown.

Franklin Castle in Ohio City

This history lends to the rich diversity and eclectic nature it boasts today. Ohio City is not only positioned with waterfront views of Lake Erie, it is also known for its small businesses, arts, ornate architecture and is home of the world famous haunted “Franklin Castle” and Ohio’s oldest publicly owned “West Side Market”.

A little slice of Paradise

The West Side Market in Ohio City

With so many captivating amenities and culture in the neighborhood, it is no secret why Ohio City was the destination location for this little slice of paradise for the couple.

Though there are many places to visit inside this oasis, we begin our story in the heart of the home, the kitchen.

Tom and Susan’s existing kitchen consisted of outdated molding, extremely loud colors, worn out cabinetry, and shabby vinyl flooring. With the counter protruding into the walkway, the kitchen over all seemed closed off from the rest of the home. The sink in the corner made for difficulty when entertaining, and left the cook feeling secluded from the group when preparing meals.

A Remarkable Transformation

Since Tom and Susan were in love with the neighborhood, they knew the best decision was to stay in their current home.

Creating an oasis in their little town then became top priority and with a little help from expert designers, Tom and Susan were able to bring their vision into existence.

A Luxury Kitchen to be admired.

The new peninsula can be used for additional seating and lending extra storage! The Kitchen comes complete with hidden space for the microwave, floor to ceiling cabinetry, crown molding, and stainless steel appliances!

The Blue and white shaker cabinets suit the couple’s taste’s perfect while the addition of counter space added versatility and the ability to host multiple people in the kitchen at the same time.

With all of the major upgrades to their Ohio City haven, It is safe to say that Tom and Susan are extremely please with their new home and can’t wait to share it with those that they love.
