Remodeling Your Home to Age in Place

Aging in Place: Remodeling Your home for the Long Term

The New Master Bedroom

This master suite renovation begins with the story of a couple of empty nesters (and previous clients) who desired to continue on their journey of creating their single-floor living dream home.  Having completed a kitchen renovation with us the year before, they wanted to not only carry the continuity of glam and beauty throughout the rest of the first floor but also to consider transitioning to first-floor living for ease of aging in place.  This inspired them to use their imaginations and transform an entire wing of their home into a master suite.

The addition of a first-floor master suite would require reconfiguring two unused and awkwardly placed bedrooms as well as an outdated bathroom to become the bedroom, bathroom, and walk-in closet of their dreams.

Addressing the Client’s Needs and Desires

Aging in Place (ADA Compliance)

In planning for aging in place, the couple desired to include Universal design features such as a curbless entry shower, shower bench for ease of bathing, an extendable shower head, and a grab bar next to the toilet. We were sure to make these functional features stylish and up-to-date in appearance, creating continuity and glam throughout the home

A Place for Everything (Walk-in Closet)

While the existing space had closets scattered throughout, the desire of the homeowner was to create more useful spaces to store clothing and other items. The solution was a walk-in closet with a customized storage plan created by California Closets. In addition, a smaller closet in the front of the bedroom allowed for a dedicated area for shoes and coats.

Match the Existing Home (Stylish Features)

The new suite features glam elements with 60s-70s inspired colors. The style and color choices are made to blend with the rest of the freshly renovated spaces, creating a cohesive and beautifully designed home.

Improved Appearance ( High End Finishes)

High end finishes were chosen because of their appeal as well as their durability. The shower head boasts h20 kinetic technology, offering a high pressure shower experience without using excess water. A modern designed waterfall faucet provides a spa like experience. The quartz countertops and 4x8 porcelain panels in the shower offering durability and easy maintenance.

His and Her Spaces (Double Shower Heads and Vanity)

Double sinks and double shower heads offer additional space for both husband and wife to utilize without friction. The extra large vanity also provides an additional storage area with drawers and cabinets for each family member, creating a functional and efficient environment. Raised countertops also make it easier to wash up by reducing the need to bend over when using the sink.

Improve Lighting (Lighting Plan)

In addition to LED can lights in the bathroom, shower, and bedroom individual task lighting was added above each sink. Individual task lighting was added above each sink, along with LED can lights throughout the bathroom, bedroom, and even in the shower. The new lighting was not only effective in illuminating the space but further added to the stylistic elements to create a cohesive design.

The Best Use of Natural Light (New Windows)

To improve lighting for tired eyes, 4 new windows were installed. Although the new shower placement would interfere with the 4th window, by modifying the size installed we could still incorporate it and make the best use of natural light within the space.

Easy Maintenance

The use of 4x8 porcelain panels established a nearly grout-free shower, making for much easier cleaning, (No more scrubbing grout with a toothbrush) while, Cambria Quartz used on the shower bench, pony wall, and countertops further provide low-maintenance surfaces for homeowners.
